Angels To Look For Pitching Help In Atlantic League?
The Angels are strapped for pitching and could look for help in the Atlantic League, which began play last week.
"We've gone as deep as we can right now with what we have," Los Angeles manager Mike Scioscia said.
"There are some good pitchers that don't have jobs that have major league experience," Scioscia said of the Atlantic League. "I guarantee you . . . every team sends scouts.
"A lot of pitchers have gone to independent leagues, gotten exposure, gotten a second look and have really taken advantage of it. And I think everything's primed this year, when you look at pitching around the league, for that to happen again."
Free Agent Byrd Says He'd Pitch For Angels
Free agent pitcher Paul Byrd has been throwing and says that his agent has spoken to the Angels about him helping their injury-riddled rotation.
"My agent talked to them pretty recently ... but they're not spending money, and they say they're going to stay in-house," Byrd told the Los Angeles Times. "They have [John] Lackey and [Ervin] Santana coming back, [Kelvim] Escobar. They want to see what their young guys can do. I take no offense."
Byrd played for the Angels back in 2005, and really enjoyed his time with the club.
"I loved Scioscia, their emphasis on pitching and defense, and it's a good park for me to pitch in. I want to play for a contender in an area I enjoy. The Angels are a great situation," Byrd added.
Nationals Confirm Interest In Pedro
Nationals acting general manager Mike Rizzo confirmed on Friday that the team has interest in free agent pitcher Pedro Martinez.
Martinez is seeking $5 million annually.
"Early on we had mild interest," Rizzo said, "and I would say it's probably still at a mild interest. If the price were right we'd consider it, just to give us a little more depth.
"Now I feel good about our rotation; they're young, but I think the upside of the staff is really good. But Pedro would have a good stabilizing effect just because of his experience level and his willingness to be a teacher and a mentor to the young guys. This guy is a Hall of Fame pitcher who knows how to prepare himself and get ready for games, and that's how I would describe our interest level."
Holliday Already Looking Over To Yankees
Matt Holliday was asked about possibly joining the Yankees while the A's were in New York.

"I wouldn't be looking around if I were under contract for four years, but I think I'd be lying if I said I wouldn't be interested, especially with the Yankees being such a storied franchise."
RealGM Note: Johnny Damon and Hideki Matsui will both be free agents following this season and so the Yankees will likely look at Holliday as a power right-handed bat for left field.
